From the Vaults: Made in South Bay
25 05 2009
Ever see this 7″ sitting in the dollar bin? Hope you picked it up! Though details are sketchy and hard to come by, the Made in South Bay compilation is probably one of the rarest American hardcore records in existence. Supposedly only 100 were made and given away at a show in Los Angeles in the early ’80s late ’90s (??). Given that there’s no label artwork or picture sleeve—just a stamp on one side of the record—I wouldn’t be surprised if at least half of them were tossed in the trash over the years. The only copy I’ve ever seen has a sticker on the other side with a track list.
The bands? The most “well-known” of the six is Artistic Decline. They had a four-song 7″ in ’83 and an LP that was supposed to come out around the same time but didn’t end up getting released until ’87. (The album, which features Pettibon artwork, is a bit underrated in my opinion, probably due to its rarity and the fact that it says ’87 on the cover instead of ’83). Ill Will pops up on a couple of the Life Is… SoCal hardcore compilations that New Underground Records put out. I don’t really know anything about the other four bands (or when they were around)—Genetic Damage (think they shared one or two members w/ Ill Will), Western Waste, Bedlam, and Unknown Society.
You might have heard Unknown Society on the Staring Down the Barrel comp LP that came out a few years ago (their track was taken from this 7″). Now you can listen to the entire six-track EP here:
1) Genetic Damage – “Badge Means You Suck”
2) Artistic Decline – “Reality or Dream”
4) Western Waste – “Trapped Inside”
6) Unknown Society – “You Hippy”
My guess is that “Criminal Records” has some connection with Ill Will, since the band reunited in the late-’90s (?) and released a CD on the same label. But who knows? If you can shed some light on this obscure comp, post a comment…

ALL FOREIGN JUNK
14 05 2009
Ydinaseeton Pohjola– Euro-Ohjukset 7” (Nightstick Justice Records)
Bleak, raw Finnish punk. The singer has no idea how to scream, so you can picture every time they play he spends the night afterwards coughing up blood while he chokes down some greasy bootleg vodka; and the guitar tone sounds like a horrible cheap digital pedal that tremors like a dirty CD in a couple of song pauses. All of these little disconcerting moments add to the impact of the music, and fortunately the song writing is inventive, though not experimental/weird enough that the entire thing sounds like a school project in rewriting the Havoc records reissue catalog. This sounds pretty unique and interesting, another great 7” from the modern Finnish scene which has given me plenty of justification to never want to visit that country and experience the kinds of miseries that go into making this music.

Sing Sing Power Pop Reissues
14 05 2009Sing Sing Records, a relatively new reissue label outta New York, just announced their fresh batch of 7″ power pop/punk reissues. This time around they’re serving up the de CYLINDERS’ “I Wanna Get Married” (from 1980), JETZ “Catch Me” (1979) and their second release by Northern Ireland’s almighty RUDI.
Sing Sing released their first batch of 7″s back in early March (ROSES ARE RED, the ZIPS and Rudi’s classic “Big Time”). With the exception of the de Cylinders (from the Netherlands), it looks like Sing Sing is focusing on the greater United Kingdom and Northern Ireland for their source material. Never a bad thing, especially when it comes to this brand of buzz and punch power pop. Myself, I can’t get enough of the Northern Ireland stuff alone. Some of the absolute best, catchiest punk ever recorded.
Thankfully these aren’t fucking buy-or-die releases, and they won’t cost you a small fortune. Six bucks a pop, and even the previous releases are still in stock.
Contrast that with 1977 Records outta Japan. They have put a nice dent in reissuing some of the best (and more expensive) punk and power pop singles (CELL 609, the MODERNS and DANSETTE DAMAGE are in the current group of releases), but they’re pricey out of the gate ($12 in the US) and once they’re gone (limited to 500), even the reissues get to be expensive.
If this ain’t enough for you, be sure to check out Sing Sing’s Blog. And of course if all this wienie rock power pop shit gets you going, the 45 Revolutions blog is another must.
Dig In!
