Monday Photo Blog: Ricky Adam!!!

29 03 2010

Here are two photos from Ricky Adam, a killer photographer from Northern Ireland. You might remember him from his interview in MRR #276. These two pics were part of the Maximum Photo Issue and photo show. Something different than the typical sweaty-dude moshpit type photo.

Bonus Video of the Week: Siberian Hardcore

27 03 2010

From the description on YouTube:

The almighty ORGASM OF NOSTRADAMUS from Ulan-Ude, Siberia, with their top 40 smash hit rip-snorter, “Jolly Tough Guys”! Their guitarist Abba was killed when Moscow skins gave him a bottle of battery acid and told him it was vodka. He died after a few days of excruciating agony in hospital. Some months later Ugol, their charismatic vocalist, dropped dead in a St. Petersburg record store from an overdose of alcohol and pills. I believe bass-player Zombie and co-vocals Rezan carry on the O.N. name in Ulan-Ude – “NEON”. Classic band!

Video of the Week: Neurosis at Gilman, 1988

24 03 2010

Seems like a good day to fire up the old YouTube time machine. And where in punk time do we find ourselves? Ahhh, 20+ years ago at 924 Gilman as Pain of Mind-era Neurosis grace the stage. Please take note of how tiny and young everybody is.

You can find more awesome videos like this over at http://killthatcat.com
It’s full of shredding new bands, and some jaw dropping archival shit. Check it out!

Bruce Roehrs 1950-2010

17 03 2010

Bruce Roehrs passed away in his home on Saturday, March 13th, 2010.  He was a genuine friend to many and always had your back and a kind word to boot.  An ardent music fan as well as a long time column writer/contributor for Maximum Rocknroll, Bruce lived and breathed punk rock. Bruce will be sorely missed.

The Bruce Roehrs Memorial Fund
Bruce took many of his friends, both locals and out-of-towners, to the Columbarium in San Francisco, where he had happily made his home since the mid ’80s. Built in 1898, this San Francisco landmark is home to the memorial sites of some of SF’s founding families as well as some of its more notorious occupants, such as Dirk Dirksen (the punk music promoter nicknamed “The Pope of Punk”). It is a non-denominational memorial site that Bruce loved for its beauty, craftsmanship, and tranquility, and it was where his memorial service was held on Friday, April 9th, 2010. All money donated to the Bruce Roehrs Memorial Fund will be used to secure a spot for Bruce in the Columbarium, a place that is truly worthy of his memory.

We still need to raise a good deal of money for this, so please give if you can.

Feel free to continue to leave comments here. Let us never forget the great Bruce Roehrs!

Video of the Week: Gordon Zola, Cheesemonger

17 03 2010

Here’s a little change of pace from the usual band videos. Gordon Zola, former MRR & Epicenter shitworker and member of the infamous COOPERATIVE, has written a book… about cheese! It’s called Cheesemonger: A Life on the Wedge, and if you missed our review, you’d better go back and get yourself a copy of MRR #322. Here’s a short video by Bridget Huber and Nancy López documenting the book’s release party at SF’s Amnesia bar (which used to be called something else, but I just…can’t…remember…)

Scene Report: Carbondale, IL

16 03 2010

Alright! From the March issue of MRR (#322 — available here), here’s an A+ scene report from southern Illinois. We wanna know about your scene too! Send text and photos to webzine {at} maximumrocknroll(.)com, and please include photo credits and links for the bands you mention. No scene left behind!

Ray Suburbia here with the good word from Carbondale. I’ve been lazy, busy, sleepy, drunk, and too bored to write a new one of these lately. It’s much easier to do drugs in the woods than bike to the library and type while weirdos jerk off using hand sanitizer next to you. But luckily for all of you I’ve gotten over my faux-apathy (and fear of strange semen) and have come to spread the gospel of true small town DIY punk rock.

Conniption Fitts

Mother Nature and bad business acumen have worked together to close two of the three reliable show bars in town. The Hangar 9 closed because the roof collapsed under the weight of a crazy ice storm. Booby’s Beergarden (which in the past had been very, very kind to the punks) ran itself into the ground. Not surprising since it was pretty much a front for an incarcerated, convicted child molester. Giving out $100 dollar guarantees every night was awesome for all of us booking and playing shows this past year, but man, was that a stupid idea for a bar to do. Seriously, it’s like a David Lynch small town around here. There also haven’t been any shows at the Big Muddy IMC space for a long while since the cops starting busting every show. We can thank the kids that fucking advertised a “rave” at the space. Once again, stupid humans ruining it all. The only upside to these closings is that more and more shows and kids have been forced to move to houses.

Lost Cross house (photo by Patrick Houdek)

Along the lines of houses, Lost Cross is still going strong. We’ve got the new housemates John, Wally, and Shawn to thank for that. When Tim moved to Chicago to get married (and I got burnt the fuck out of living there) they stepped up, moved in and have helped keep it thriving. Shows constantly. You can get a hold of them directly through the mail (407 W. Elm, Carbondale, IL, 62901). The Swamp has been having about a million shows a week lately. They tend to have shows that lean towards the noisier/experimental/prog elements of DIY music. It’s not really my scene, so I don’t tend to go to a lot of their shows. But it’s fucking awesome that they’re giving up their house for strangers and friends. I know they have a MySpace, so you can get a hold of them there. The Skihouse has been having the odd show every now and then (maybe once every couple of months). The shows there tend to be more of an event, due to the sporadic nature. Lots of random faces. Their shows are more of the indie punk variety, and are pretty eclectic, actually. It’s a great venue: huge basement with high ceilings and a great sound system. Hopefully they can have more shows regularly. The only reliable bar that does punk shows right now is PK’s. They have them mostly Thursday through Saturday nights, but occasional weekday shows as well. It’s nice cause it’s a local townie bar that doesn’t charge cover (but still pays bands), and is pretty much barren of collegiate douchebaggery. I’ve heard that there’s a restaurant in town that’s starting to do shows, but I’m not too sure what the deal is. No one I’ve known personally has done anything there. Maybe next time I’ll have more on that. Read the rest of this entry »

Monday Photo Blog: Wandi Rana

15 03 2010

Wandi Rana sent some killer, crazy photos of Indonesian punks for the photo issue. Here’s one more that didn’t make it in:

Sangkakala

Sangkakala @ Amphiteater Taman Budaya, Yogyakarta, Indonesia (photo by Wandi Rana)

For the Euro-philes, Karl Nagel sent a link to an amazing site, Punkfoto.de, a collection of over 4,500(!) punk photos from 1977 – 2007. Plenty of live photos, a bunch squats, more mohawks than you can count…an overall amazing documentation of the German punk scene.
