Costume Punx

29 10 2010

Halloween is upon us, and if you happen to live in a country that celebrates this, the most goth day of the year, then I’m willing to bet your primary concerns right now are either Pumpkin shortages, or what in the name of Lucifer you’re going to dress as.

If in doubt, a paper bag over the head is a sure fire winner

Assuming that you’ll be avoiding all those nasty heteronormative clichés (no punk would ever lump for sexy vampire / zombie / witch now, would they?!) like the plague, you could do a lot worse than look to the wildest ever dressed scene for some inspiration. Of course, we’re talking about LA Punk circa 1977-79. As you’ll be wanting to differentiate from this kind of heinous shittery, you’ll need to get specific.

Brendan Mullen’s book ‘Live at the Masque: Nightmares in Punk Alley’ documents the

Dress you and your girlfriends up as Castration Squad and rage in the streets?

bands, events and outfits of this scene, from anonymous lurkers to Darby himself, quite often in rare technicolour detail. In addition to this, a radical lady and obsessive archivist of this period is none other than Alice Bag, whose Flickr feed provides a motherlode of OG snapsnots of subterranean self-styled freaky legends.

If you ask me, these combos are way too good to keep to one day of the year, so draw on a Germs Burn, talc up your face a little, and get outlandish!

Skins, Brains & Art

13 10 2010

All you Skeeno punks and passers-through should check this out — an exhibit of Reno punk record art at a real-life museum curated by real-life punx! We nerds here at MRR appreciate the obsessive streak that led Mac Schopen to attempt to track down every record by a Reno band ever — not just punk bands. His collection, and a collaborative effort with Jeanne Jo (formerly of the Skeeno band, Arabella) led to the idea of creating an exhibit of the record cover art. And here it is! There’s also supposed to be an accompanying book, which we can’t wait to see.

Here’s what the Nevada Museum of Art’s website has to say:

The Wrong Side of Reno: Three Decades of Punk and Hardcore Music in the Biggest Little City is the first exhibition to present a comprehensive anthology of vinyl records that have been pressed in Reno during the city’s long and intimate history with underground music.

Early pioneers of hardcore, the Reno punk band 7 Seconds released their first vinyl 7” record in 1982, establishing Reno as a creative voice in what would quickly become a global subculture. The community they helped create still thrives in Reno today, sequestered in basements, home-recording studios and independent record shops — proof that the spirited anger of Hardcore Punk is as resilient and vibrant as ever.

Over 150 albums will be on display from bands such as Iron Lung, Zoinks, Crushstory, The Atomiks, and This Computer Kills. All of the albums on view in the exhibition are from the private collection of Mac Schopen. A book, edited by Jeanne Jo and Mac Schopen, will accompany the exhibition.

You can catch Mac Schopen at the museum, talking about the exhibit on Friday October 22, 2010 / 12:00 pm – 12:30 pm. Read an article about the curators in the Reno News & Review here.
