Submit to the DIY Film Fest 2011

30 11 2010

DIY FILM FEST is accepting submissions for a competition called “Spirit of DIY” for the 3rd edition of the festival, which will be held July 9-10, 2011, in Gdynia, Poland, and Minsk, Belarus. If you think your film matches the motto “From DIY, About DIY” and applies somehow to the idea “Do It Yourself,” write to diyfilmfest {at} gmail(.)com. They will reply with the requirements for your submission and give you the address to send a viewing copy. The deadline is April 22, 2011. However, submitting films is an ongoing process and works received after the deadline will be considered for the 2012 fest. “Spirit of DIY” is not restricted to any genre, year of production, or film length. Unhindered creativity and cinematography are the most important aspects for qualification. The fest’s judges make the decisions about participation in the competition, whereas festival audiences of both countries choose the winner of the Sarah Jacobson Award. Additionally, every qualified work will be reviewed on the Internet, and their authors may count on further promotion and film screenings. DIY OR DIE!

“Punk problems” in Indonesia…

23 11 2010

Courtesy of Thomas Craven:

And MRR reader Austin sent in this comment…

Pulled from another article in the Jakarta Post:

Jakarta street punks not as scary as they look
Marco, from a street punk community in Cilandak, South Jakarta, said he would like to do something other than performing on the street, but he did not have enough money yet to start a business. “I never steal though. I do feel that I am much better than those people with neat appearances who are corrupt,” Marco said. He added he wondered why Public Order officers often arrested them even though they never violated the law. Street punks are targets of raids because the administration categorizes them as people with social problems who disturb public order.

It’s always going to be difficult to live the way you want to. Incredible respect for people that are so dedicated to their passions that they pursue them despite all reprisals.

Monday Photo Blog: Midwest Can Be Alright

22 11 2010

I’m from the Midwest and more or less fled to the West Coast as soon as I could. I’ve moved back to the Midwest a few times, but here I am, out in the Bay Area again. When I’m here, I miss the Midwest. When I’m in the Midwest I can’t believe I ever left California. Grass is greener and all that. Despite the many qualms I have with the Midwest (and even because of those qualms), I have a soft spot for the Midwest. So when Bobby Hussy — himself a Bay Area transplant from the Midwest — sent a batch of photos from a recent trip back to Madison for Chopperfest, it caught my eye. I bumped his photos to the top of the queue.

And given the little theme of this week’s photo blog, I thought I’d close with these two gems, both from my native Indiana.

The GIZMOS – The Midwest Can Be Alright

DOW JONES & THE INDUSTRIALS – Can’t Stand the Midwest

California Punxploitation Weekend

18 11 2010

If you live near SF or LA and love punxploitation movies like I do, you’re in for a treat this weekend. Brush your long hair into a mohawk, get some sushi and don’t pay, then head to the movie theater for some bad dialog and pointless violence…

As part of their book tour, the folx who did Destroy All Movies!!! The Complete Guide to Punks on Film (on Fantagraphics) are presenting a weekend of punk movies and punx on TV, starting this Friday at SF’s Roxie Theater. Surf II, possibly the most so-bad-it’s-good movie of all time, shows with Times Square, a prophetic proto-riot grrrl flick that rivals the greatness of Ladies and Gentlemen the Fabulous Stains.

Also Friday night, in LA, Alex Cox, director of the greatest punk movie ever, Repo Man, brings a new cut of his weird and kinda bad, yet great Straight to Hell. Straight to Hell Returns shows at UCLA’s Film & Television Archive with the director in person. I pretty sure it’s just a lucky coincidence that this is playing right before the Destroy All Movies event, which as you can see in this picture from their website, has deemed the movie NOT PUNK!

Anyway…

Saturday and Sunday the Destroy All Movies tour comes to LA with an amazing array of goodies at the historic Silent Movie Theater on Fairfax. Too much great stuff to list so check it all out here. I’m especially excited about the Punk TV Party on Saturday and La Brune Et Moi and Desperate Teenage Lovedolls on Sunday (also with the director in person). Tickets are $10 per event or $35 for the whole weekend… Sneak beers in and sing along!
“I dig pain!”
“I hate you! I berate you!”
