Movie of the Week: Last Fast Ride

16 06 2011

If you’re not from the Bay Area you may or may not remember Marian Anderson. She was the super outrageous and controversial singer of THE INSAINTS in the ’90s. She almost got Gilman shut down for sticking a banana in her vajayjay and other sordid sexual acts when the douchebag ex-drummer of the DKs called the man. She also had a torrid relationship with Tim Yo, who she loved dearly till the end. I just know her as one of my few bestest friends and I loved her dearly. One ex-girlfriend even used to refer to her as my mom. I was in a band with her and lived with her when I moved to Hollywood, taking me in when I had no place to go. Anyway, the movie is fantastic. Along with fellow Marian pal Nick, we drove all night to make the film’s premier at Sundance, resulting in us getting pulled over and detained for two hours while drug sniffin’ dogs were sicked on our ripped apart rental car. She would have loved it. Fuck the pigs! Great and heartfelt interviews with Tim Yo(!), Lint, Daniel from the Insaints, the dude from the Offspring, and love of her life Danielle Bernal, along with all of her friends. Narrated by Henry Rollins!?! I cried my guts out and so will you. A woman who rose from sexual and physical abuse, who wasn’t bitter but loving and protective as hell to those lucky enough to call her their friend. Don’t miss it.

Last Fast Ride plays Saturday June 25th at the Victoria Theater in SF as part of the Frameline Film Festival.

Record of the Week: TERRIBLE FEELINGS “Impending Doom” 45

15 06 2011

There is a chance that this may be my new favorite band, which is a bold claim to make from a measly two song record. TERRIBLE FEELINGS, from Malmö, Sweden, sound like they are taking cues from THE WIPERS, GORILLA ANGREB, KNUGEN FALLER and BURNING KITCHEN while maintaining their own voice in the music. It’s difficult to write and produce a two song 45 that people will actually listen to more than a couple times, but this record has me flipping the thing over and over repeatedly because these two songs are both fucking amazing. “Impending Doom” hooks you in with the first staccato guitar chord and keeps your attention throughout the whole song. The lyrics are about losing your faith in just about everything and are so terribly bleak that I wanted to write a letter to the band to make sure they didn’t kill themselves immediately after recording this. On the flip side is “Death To Everyone”, which keeps the bad times rolling. The music is upbeat and poppy, but the lyrics are about complacency and forgetting about your dreams. There is musical interlude that sounds just like that part of that one GERMS song that says “I want out now!”. You can sing those lyrics along with this part and it fits in thematically but doesn’t detract one bit from the song! Clean guitars, steady drums and emotionally dark lyrics all combine to make you dance and feel like shit at the same time Listen to this and imagine living somewhere that only has five to six hours of daylight in the wintertime. This will definitely be one of my favorite records of the year and hopefully there will be enough bleak winter months over there to inspire a full LP. (Sabotage Records/Lack of Sleep Records)

Video of the Week: Crazy Spirit at Chaos in Tejas 2011

12 06 2011

Here’s a befittingly weird-quality video of NYC’s CRAZY SPIRIT at this year’s Chaos in Tejas. Yeah, I know, there’s a million videos available from the fest — why this one? Well, I’ll tell you: 1) You already watched the ones of Youth Of Today, 2) You were too wasted when you were at this show to remember it, and 3) As a caution to others — don’t be like me, kicking yourself for missing them on their current tour with Japan’s SLOWMOTIONS. See them in NorCal and the Northwest this week!

Life During Wartime interviews:
Loose Values

9 06 2011

Hey, here’s the third Life During Wartime interview, from our good pals at KBOO’s Life During Wartime radio show in Portland, OR… This time Colin interviews Portland “burnouts” LOOSE VALUES, whose complete on-air performance can be heard here. Come laugh and cry with us, won’t you?…

Loose Values:
Patrick — drums and bass
Drew — guitar and bass
Justyn — guitar and drums

Colin: How did you decide to start playing as a band?

Justyn: Drew and myself have been playing for a while. We used to play in a Halloween band called Ray Davies Babies with Rabies [lots of background laughs] and that was really fun. We liked playing  music together.

Colin: And this Halloween band was it all sorts of stuff or…

Drew: Mostly ’60s psychedelic crap.

Justyn: And then Pat came and saved u.

Patrick: I rolled into town in my hoopty.

Colin: How did you come across your name? Sub-question: did you realize it’s a combination of the Black Flag songs “Loose Nut” and “No Values”?

Justyn: Yeah, we thought about that afterwards, but  really I was in the Bay Area and my friend — we’d been staying up all night, and he made us watch the Garbage Pail Kids movie. I don’t know if you’ve ever seen it but it’s pretty weird

Drew: It’s like a really badly made porn.

Justyn: It’s pretty awful, but it’s really great at the same time. We were watching it and we were kind of blown away in our overhang stupor, and our friend  walked in and said, “Oh, you guys like this huh?” And we said, “Yeah, but it’s so messed up. What is going on in this movie? It’s so weird and offensive.” He said, “Well, yeah, but you know they had loose values in the ’80s.” and I immediately fell in love with that name and told Drew about it, and there it is.

Colin: Next thing you know you’re here at KBOO telling the story. Are you guys playing in any other bands at present, or contributing to the punk scene in some other way?

Justyn: I don’t know about contributing [laughs]. We’re kind of burnouts, you know, we applaud from afar. Pat here is getting ready to go on tour with his other band, which is…

Patrick: I have a band called Warhammer 48k, and other band called Jealousy. But that’s all. Neither here nor there… Well, more there than here…

Justyn: It’s very there… but here, I play in another band. It’s kind of a heavy duty metal band called Weirding Module where I play drums. We’ve only played a handful of shows.

Drew: I make fried food.

Justyn: So do I! That’s weird, dude. We should work together sometime. [Wha-wuuuh sound effects — they do work together...]

Colin: So, Portland has  a pretty divided scene as far as punks, garage, etc. Where do you guys feel like you fit in?

Justyn: I guess I’ve notice that, but I’ve always done my own thing. I just like music. I’ve gone to every kind of show you can imagine, and hung out with different folks in this town. It’s definitely divided but we don’t’ give too much to that. We don’t really care. Do you think it’s divided?

Colin: Kind  of, but to each their own.

Drew: We just want to hug everyone. [Lots of talk about hugging and unity here...]

Colin: What is the funniest thing that’s happened to you as a band?

Justyn: Playing with Mike Hudson and Cheetah Chrome was pretty fun.

Drew: And entertaining.

Colin: And how’d that come about?

Justyn: We got asked. First we thought we were playing with the Pagans…

Drew: …then it turned out we were the Pagans for that show.

Justyn: Yeah, Drew got in contact with those guys to figure out what was going on. We ended up learning some Pagans songs and some Dead Boys songs, and we almost learned a Human Switchboard song.

Drew: We did… five minutes before we played it.

Colin: Did Cheetah sing or play guitar?

Justyn: He  sang and played on a Dead Boys song, and then him and — what’s that dude’s name?

Drew: Bob Pfifer. It was fun. It was really weird, but it was fun. It was a loose night.

Justyn: Really.

Drew: Sound checking with those guys and making it halfway through each song, and then they’d go “Okay, it’s fine.”

Justyn: Old, fragile burnouts. We see our future in them [laughs all around!] But it was an honor to play. We’ve been huge Pagans and Dead Boys fans forever so it was pretty amazing.

Drew: Yeah, it was a good night.

Colin: And what are your plans for the future? Demo coming out?

Justyn: We have a demo out now, actually. It’s been out for a while. I don’t know where you’ve been… and I can say the name of it because it’s the name of the demo (referring to FCC regulations).

Colin: Do it.

Justyn: It’s called Raging Bullshit. It’s a piece of art in itself [laughs from the crowd]. But, we’re getting ready to record this weekend over at Buzz or Howl, and I’m pretty excited about it.

Colin: Awesome. Any closing statements?

Justyn: No.

Colin: How should people contact you if they want you to play their shows?

Drew: Face… uh. [Everyone laughs]

Drew: We do have a band email: loosevalues {at} hotmail(.)com

Justyn: Bingo.

Drew: …and I’ll check it tomorrow.

Justyn: We’ll go see how many shows we have lined up tonight.

Thanks to Loose Values for playing and for playing records for the rest of the radio show.

Record of the Week: ANS/RAMMING SPEED split LP

8 06 2011

The Bay Area’s ANS has been gracing us with their brand of ’80s skate thrash crossover for years now, but these tracks venture into DEATH territory while still keeping the rad thrash vocals. The dude who sings for ANS has a perfect voice and delivery for this type of music: solid, more spoken than screechy metal growls. The last track goes into full on head bangin’ jam sesh with a messy sonic flangy meltdown. Fucking sweet. The lyrics are dark, even the ones about skating and growing up. There are lessons these guys are learning as they get older and lessons they are teaching, namely how to play skate thrash in a fresh, yet recognizable and traditional way. Props to their props to the late Bruce Roehrs with the song “Roehrs’ War.” Now the flipside… I have been a fan of Boston’s RAMMING SPEED since I saw them in a basement in Chicago. I wandered into a scene of sweaty, shirtless, denim-vested dudes wearing obscenely short jean shorts, “This song is about hanging out with your friends, havin’ a good time and eatin’ pizza. It’s called ‘Pizza Party!’” Then the first note struck. I don’t know if people take this band seriously with songs about pizza, but you should—these guys can fucking play. This band is dynamic to say the least. Delivering thrash metal with punk undertones, occasional blast beats, and definite D-beat moments with HC splattered all over this shit, there is not a boring moment. The vocals are harsh, scratchy and rage with a definite HC influence. The production on this is indeed pretty polished, but c’mon, this isn’t black metal, it’s fucking thrash. Get into it. This is a great split—two rad bands that play punk tinged thrash metal that know how to be serious, but don’t take themselves too seriously. Fucking awesome. (Tank Crimes)
