Monday Photo Blog: Ben Trogdon

31 10 2011

Well, we are sad to announce that Mark “icki” Murrmann is stepping down from his duties as MRR’s Monday Photo Blog editor. We can only hope to live up to the quality standard that icki has set in his two and a half years on the job. You can still keep up with Mark at his website, and I’m sure he’ll still be contributing to MRR now and again. So, thank you icki for all of the amazing photos!

While we’re looking for a new photo editor, your fearless Webmaster has been scouring recent contributions. Amongst shot after shot of shirtless singer dudes we were pleased to find an amazing selection of band portraits, live pics and scene photos from Olympia’s Ben Trogdon, editor of NUTS! zine and drummer of the great Weird TV. Check out his photo site here, and some of his awesome shots right here!

March of the (economic) undead in SF on Halloween!!

30 10 2011

EAT THE RICH! It’s a MARCH OF THE (economic) UNDEAD!!

We have been scrambling and scrounging a living for an eternity and now we are HUNGRY FOR RESOURCES!

We are a unified group of people who are 99% dead! At our last eternal meeting we decided to organize with the living to gain greater access to resources our movement needs to succeed!

Our undead army will be dancing, chanting, and trick-or-treating our way through One of San Francisco’s wealthiest neighborhoods looking for the sustenance we crave….JOIN US!!!!

Monday, October 31st
HALLOWEEN
The corner of Jackson & Scott in San Francisco
Meet at 6:30 to share choreography
March/Dance/Shamble at 7 sharp

In addition to the fun and festivities, we will be asking the members of the 1% to join us in the cause of widespread social justice, using their bodies as well as their wealth.

**This is intended as a family-friendly event: consider costumes and behavior that are appropriate for children trick-or-treating around us.**

Alta Plaza Park is accessible via the MUNI 3, 24, and 22 lines. We will be meeting at the Jackson and Scott entrance to share dance moves, chant sheets, and do last-minute undead makeup.

Records of the Week: DEATHCAGE and DEPHOSPHORUS LPs

28 10 2011

DEATHCAGE – Plague of the Rats LP
Hot damn, hooked from the first song. I very much enjoyed the DEATHCAGE EPs, and this is more of the same incredibly epic, fist-pumping Japanese hardcore-meets-epic metal a la the almighty DEATH SIDE. Every fucking song on this platter, even the lesser ones, has a part that cries out for the horns or a bit of air guitar. Sure it’s derivative — so fucking what? The more important point is that it’s fucking great! Got a metal friend who thinks punk is all untalented noise? Put this bastard on and laugh right in his fucking face. Everything on here, from the phenomenal leads to the brutal just-this-side-of-metal drumming to the massive gang choruses is so fucking on point it’s ridiculous. By all rights this should be appearing on a number of “best of the year” lists. Flat out fucking awesome. (Agipunk)

—Andrew Underwood

DEPHOSPHORUS – Axiom LP
I absolutely love when I get a record to review, have never heard of the band yet within seconds of dropping the needle I’m floored and headbanging. DEPHOSPHORUS are onto something here. DEPHOSPHORUS is a three piece from Greece. Their sound is unique in that it is somewhat a mix of the older German metalcore sound and grindcore but with some electronics added. Every track sounds huge. It’s hard to believe this is just three people. “Collimator” could be a heavier BURIAL YEAR. “Continuum” has a slight metal leaning. “Dephosphorus” has more melodic guitars, has slower moments and more obvious electronics. The album has a cosmic or space and time theme throughout the lyrics. Wow. (7DegreesRecords)

Monday Photo Blog: Budget Rock RIP edition

24 10 2011

This past weekend marked the end of the Bay Area’s Budget Rock Fest. Ten years into it and Chris Owen, Mitch Cardwell and the whole gang wisely decided to pack it in. Don’t get me wrong — I’ve had plenty of fun at Budget Rock, but it’s good to see someone call it a day while they’re going on strong rather than dragging it out, you know? So, with that in mind, I thought I’d post a few shots from this year’s blow-out and a few hits/misses from the past few years too.

We’ve got a nice backlog of submissions — we’ll be getting them up soon! But keep ‘em coming! The more, the better.

Kevin Mahoney of SIEGE: 1965-2011

22 10 2011

Kevin J. Mahoney, the former vocalist of Siege, passed away on Friday October 14th. The official cause of death has not been reported, but it is believed to have been sudden.

Mahoney was born on September 6th, 1965, and played saxophone in a ska band before joining Kurt Habelt, Henry McNamee and Rob Williams to complete the line-up of Siege. The band’s first official show was at a “Battle of the Bands” in the spring of 1984 at their Weymouth, MA high school, where they were disqualified when McNamee smashed his bass onstage.

Although the band’s members lived in and near Braintree, MA (near Boston and also home to Jerry’s Kids and Gang Green), the band was never fully accepted by the XClaim-dominated Boston hardcore scene. They were definitely not lacking sonically, however, playing furious music at breakneck speed and pioneering a new style of brutal and nihilistic hardcore.

In 1984, Siege went into Radiobeat studios to record a demo with Lou Giordano. The tape made its way through the hardcore punk underground, and clearly made an impression on Pushead for one, who included Siege on his seminal 1985 compilation Cleanse the Bacteria. The band split up the same year, and the three songs on Cleanse the Bacteria were to be the only “official” release by the band, until Relapse and Deep Six reissued the demo on CD and vinyl in 1994 and 2006, respectively.

At the time of his passing, Kevin was working in the IT department at Children’s Hospital Boston, where he had served in many capacities in his several years there. Prior to Children’s, Kevin worked for many years – beginning in 1992 – in the IT department at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston.
