Cassette of the Week! SAC Anthology 1999-2004 comp

30 03 2012

Our Record of the Week this time around is a cassette! Duluth, MN’s own Mike Wilson provided this guest review in the current issue of Maximum Rocknroll magazine…

This is an easy one. Get this tape!! Great comp of all Sacramento, CA, bands from 1999-2004. Lots of classic stuff here. Sacramento has produced a specific breed of punk/pop/garage bands over the past 25 years or so that all somehow have a similar feel. This 24-song tape is a great representation of the “Sacramento sound” that we all know and love. I would say that the BANANAS are the band of this category that is the most well known. They have a fantastic song on here, an earlier song of theirs called “Mr. Octopus Is Dead.” Not every band sounds the same though—two bands stand out as being particularly different (PETS and the GYNAS), but all the tracks flow together really nicely. My personal favorites of this tape include the BANANAS, THE FOUR EYES, MILHOUSE USA (I forgot how good that band was! [I know! —ed.]), ROCK THE LIGHT, and HORNY MORMONS. But there is definitely no filler here—every band is at least good, if not great. This tape is by no means a definitive all time Sacramento comp (see SEWER TROUT, NAR, POUNDED CLOWN, LIZARDS, LOS HEUVOS, etc.), but it is a great start to one. (Pleasant Screams Cassettes)

Bombs for the Hungry

17 03 2012

This just in from the folks at Food Not Bombs…

20120317-132445.jpg

Dear people of good will, we need your support!

More efforts to ban the sharing of meals with the hungry. Many tens of thousands of Americans are struggling to survive yet we are witnessing a disturbing trend, local governments passing laws restricting the sharing of food. Philadelphia and Houston are the two largest cities to recently propose laws restricting private efforts to help the hungry. Philadelphia announced today that it will attempt to stop people from sharing food with the hungry outside in parks. The city of Houston is considering passing their own law against providing meals to the hungry. While local governments are claiming they are seeking to protect the poor from unsafe food they are not able to point to one case where someone was made ill. Many of those depending on these meals will be forced to eat out of the garbage if the city is able to close these meals. Food Not Bombs provides some of the healthiest meals shared with the hungry. The food is often organic and is always low in salt, sugar and fats.

People are also reporting that local police have stopped them from handing out food to the homeless often claiming that it is illegal suggesting that they could be jailed and fined. I was among 24 people arrested in Orlando, Florida in June 2011 for sharing meals to more than 24 people in violation of that cities large group feeding laws. I was held 17 days on my second arrest. I paid a $1,000 fine for my efforts. Many more people may be arrested and fined for helping the hungry and seeking to find long term solutions to America’s poverty.

We have called for an end to all laws restricting acts of compassion. Our campaign starts on Sunday, April 1, 2012 when volunteers are asked to organize celebrations in support of our right to share food. You are encouraged to organize a celebration and share free food to the hungry in your community on April 1st. Please contact your local media about your event. Endorse the global day of action and email the details of your celebration to menu {at} foodnotbombs(.)net

Thank you so much,
Keith McHenry

FOOD IS A RIGHT, NOT A PRIVILEGE – End all efforts to stop people from feeding the hungry.

From the Vaults: Christ on Parade

14 03 2012

Here at MRR’s Web HQ we continue to dig thru the archives of back issues searching for hidden treasures to post on the website. There’s no shortage of gems, actually — it seems like every page of these ’80s issues contains something of interest, or hilarity, or strange prescience…

Here we find the East Bay’s now legendary CHRIST ON PARADE, from MRR #25, May/June 1985 — only a few months after the band formed. The interview captures quite perfectly the zeitgeist of the mid-1980s, with talk about opening kids’ eyes through punk music, how TV is lame, why religion sucks, questions like “Do you think the scene is an alternative lifestyle as well as alternative music?,” and the best bit:

MRR: Is there any general message you want to get across?
Malcolm: That we’re all just shit, but there’s nothing wrong with that.

New Band Spotlight: Munchausen

7 03 2012

Here’s a review by Kevin Manion of the MUNCHAUSEN 5-song demo tape, taken from the brand new issue of MRR!

Lo-fi scum punk from Philly featuring a member of PAINT IT BLACK (which I never would have guessed). As far as their sound goes, think of FRESH MEAT or maybe LEATHER (but much more raw). The first couple of tracks are really good punk ‘n’ roll, and by that I don’t mean to imply that they sound like they should be on In The Red, cause this is definitely a step above most of the drivel that label puts out. It’s dirty, beer-soaked, memorable stuff. Conversely, the last few tracks are much darker and dirgier and almost CONDOMINIUM-esque. MUNCHAUSEN is certainly more of a basement band than a bar band; their songs have hooks, but are also little more than filthy reverberations at times. Either way, I’m into it. (munchausenphilly.bandcamp.com)

Here’s a track that’s not on their web page — one of the “dirgier” ones…

Maximum Rocknroll #347 • April 2012

4 03 2012

It’s the April 2012 issue of MRR, and just in time for election season we have a special issue looking into Ron Paul’s candidacy: what he stands for and what that means for the punks. We also have an epic, hilarious and fascinating interviews with Colin Hagendorf of Slice Harvester zine, longtime Malaysian punk force CARBURETOR DUNG, local melodic punk ragers NEON PISS, LA’s d-beat destroyers KRÜEL, and with Japan’s DAMNABLE EXCITE ZOMBIES who are as maniac as their name would suggest! As part of a series we are running of translated interviews from the killer Italian HC one-pager 10 Anni di Mucchi Selvaggi e Ossa Rotte in Italia, we have the legendary INDIGESTI. And there’s more! We have some Connecticut/ Massachusetts crust from IRON HAND, a continuation of the Finnish hardcore tradition courtesy of LAPINPOLTHAJAT, DARK TIMES from Norway with their rad Midwest-style hardcore sound, and Seattle’s CRIMINAL CODE mine some post-punk territory. All o’ that plus a rad Hawaii scene report, the most extensive review section in punk print, and all those columns you love to hate.

Record of the Week: LA’ALTS Onanie Ship Cabaret CD

16 02 2012

Holeeee shit. This is frenetic punk’n’roll featuring Passy (ex-CONFUSE) very much in the vein of the way later SWANKYS records interpreted the SEX PISTOLS. Puerile, stupid, sex-obsessed punk that you can actually dance to! And not some dumb punk dance like the pogo — I bet you could line dance to this shit. There are so many different instruments, vocalists and styles in the mix here it’s crazy. It sounds like if the WORLD/INFERNO FRIENDSHIP SOCIETY dropped the horns and started shooting for burlesque instead of cabaret? All I know is: fuck me, this is amazing. If there’s a better way to start the year than sitting at MRR listening to “Baby Piss” and drinking a beer at one in the afternoon, I can’t imagine it. I can’t even remember the last band that actually made me laugh out loud (these lyrics have to be heard to be believed). This is essential, and may just be the best thing I’ve ever gotten for review at MRR (at least it’s definitely the most surprisingly amazing!). (Strawberry Records)
