Tejas Video Meltdown #3 – Women in Prison

14 07 2011

TVM Numero Trois. Does this count as part of the fest? Are you bothered? Okay, technically a pre-fest gig, this late night exposé at Chain Drive marked our initiation into that inimitable live hardpunk music gigger experience native to Austin, quite outside of the whole Fest deal.

We learnt that in the case of WOMEN IN PRISON, this can often involve large amounts of beer, spit, and glitter. Formerly of a hundred other bands, these gallant stallions of the Texan undergrowth proved conclusively that this is no locals only outing, and their record out right now on Hozac echoes this point. Driving, writhing rage-a-thon hardcore tunes good for fightin’ round the world to. Vaaska and The Altars also played. Sweet.

Soapbox Abuse: Hardcore Nerds Help!

9 07 2011

Hey Punx! Here’s an unashamed cry for crowd-sourced help for the encyclopaedically minded among you. I’m working on a selected discography of all/majority-female, specifically hardcore, punk bands from 1980 thru now. It’s to accompany a chapter about the very same thing in a neat book called Women Make Noise coming out on an independent publisher in the not-too-distant future.

Amy Pickering of Fire Party at 924 Gilman (Photo by Matt Bokovoy)

There’s really not that much published on women in hardcore punk explicitly, which is why I’ve been asked to do this, and I chose 1980 because that’s when (according to those pesky dominant narratives, which we like to avoid, right?) punk is supposed to have mutated into “a violent mosh fest that made all punk women ever give it up to go play keyboards in a new wave band” (ahem, I paraphrase, but you know…)

While I’m plugging the internet depths, maybe there are some gems that you play every day that I’ll have missed, or a local band that never got out of town which should totally make this list because they plain ruled… or indeed maybe a new band that’s blown your mind with lady rage recently?

If so — comment! They don’t need to have internet presence necessarily, and can be from any country and any era, as long as they recorded something – but the more info you care to give the better. When the list done, it’ll be shared here, of course! If you want to know more, or feel like sending me your awesome suggestions and MP3s or anything like that: bryonybeynon AT gmail.com !

Tejas Video Meltdown #2 – Nü Sensae

6 07 2011

Welcome to the second installment of TVM, this time brought to you from the sticky floor of Austin mainstay Beerland. Despite being kinda low down on the bill, and playing only one time at a sort of peripheral-to-the-fest show, the chance to catch NÜ SENSAE live was a serious deal breaker in our attendance all the way from the U of K.

For the louts at the back, this Vancouver duo make the soundtrack to somethin’ seriously seismic. Their short set was a hidden nugget of totally furious tightness in a sea of sweat-encrusted averageness. It was pared down, spooky, and they managed to play the hardest and most directly blistering set I saw all Fest, albeit to less than thirty people.

Pfft, right? But those who missed them due to clashes or being in dumbo festival-fug mode, despair not because their intense two month (yeah, two month) “Clown Life” tour of the USA with British Colombia buds White Lung is not yet over! To whet your appetite, see here and peep the remaining dates here. Without further ado, here is the footage. Feeeeel the Darkness.

Tejas Video Meltdown #1: Crazy Spirit

1 07 2011

HEY! Here’s a brief interlude of visual treats from the fiery pit of heat and spikes that was Chaos in Tejas 2011, Austin’s annual punk rock circle jerk.

Now that the sunburn is just scar tissue and the inevitable post-fest flu has finally abated, you can sit back and enjoy the finest wobbly-handed documentation, courtesy of video/tape label enterprise Kiss Ass To Your Peer Group, with some accompanying words from your very own columnist Bryony B.

In the interests of avoiding overstimulation, we’ll be drip-feeding y’all. Get ready.

Crazy Spirit (NY) Live at Lake Travis (“The Boat”)

As a virgin to the gently swaying, salty smellin’ environs of this eponymous party boat, the cameraman and I, together with our other reserved British pal, could do little other than gawp in awe that anyone could have fun in this heat, let alone play the raging set of tight, scummy, moron punk that CRAZY SPIRIT so effortlessly did for the second time in two days, and all in less than ideal sonic circumstances.

Wild beasts of urban decay transplanted to a craggy inlet off the Texan coast, the video shows the weirdness of the situation all too well. But weird is GOOD, right? The rest of their short set is otherwise a blur, perhaps beause we also forgot to bring any food or water. Dick move.  You can also see their debut set at Emo’s here, in case ya missed it, and buy the repress of their killer demo now on 12” from this fine label.

Zine/Comp Review: Lost Tapes from the Federal Sessions

17 03 2011

Lost Tapes from the Federal Sessions

Lost Tapes from the Federal Sessions, a new zine-slash-cassette-comp out of London, UK, has been put together as a tribute to the more organic and personalised ways of finding out about new music. Firstly, forget about whether the zine comes with a tape, or the tape comes with a zine, because that may well send you into a frenzy of confusion, and enjoy 21 tracks of exciting current bands that sonically cover pretty much the entire spectrum of DIY punk rock and hardcore.

Each band gets a comprehensive interview that covers their formation, band achievements, related projects of members and personal/political standpoints (with questions written especially for them, not some kind of standard questionnaire, which is cool) as well as a piece of artwork, seemingly inspired by their name. While James has concentrated on his home scene of the UK, there are some North American bands included (notably the excellent Street Eaters, who I hadn’t heard before opening up this lovely punk parcel).

Art by Ellie May Roberts

This beautifully-packaged, large size, 54-page zine (sealed in a hand-stamped, stencilled envelope with a waxy kiss) is an awesome reminder of why, parallel to the endless treasure hunt for rare gems from days gone by, it’s as important as ever to document what’s happening in your back yard/basement — especially when what’s happening sounds this good!

Bands include: Saturday’s Kids, Woolf, Jesus of Spazzareth, Damages, Bird Calls, The Sceptres, Small Bones, Battle of Wolf 359, Human Hands, Guilty Parents, Dead in the Woods, Facel Vega.

£5 ppd in the UK . Email cyslabe {at} gmail(.)com for US/distro.

From the Vaults: Lost Cassettes, Digital Magic, and Sado-Nation

18 01 2011

Tape scan: Dwayne "Bonedog" Mileham

My creepazoid lurking around rad old punkers’ Facebook profiles (what?) is always bearing fruit, but never more so than today. It appears obsessive archivist and collector Dwayne “Bonedog” Mileham has uncovered quite a gem!

This is a long lost, three-track SADO-NATION basement recording from 1982/83. Details are hazy but it seems these snarly Portland ragers made a handful of copies of this recording just to send to Maximum back in the day, and the tape found its way to Dwayne’s collection via Aaron Cometbus in the mid-’80s, where it has sat in his cavernous record room ever since.

The band had long since lost their copy, but miraculously this one still plays today, and in collaboration with front lady Mish, (formerly of all-girl group, the Braphsmears) this video has been made to give people access to these amazingly good quality recordings. Mish says they may well be put out as a proper release, 31 years later!

New Band Spotlight: Throwing Up

5 01 2011

Photo: Clare James Clare Perfect proof that 2011 is gonna hurl some exciting new sounds across my city, THROWING UP is a brand new band from London, England. This vomitous triad only formed in September, have been sharing their songs with the world for less than 24 hours, and I’m lovesick already.

Formed of Claire and Camille, formerly of all-girl rage troupe Headless, and world famous fashion photographer (wait I turned into Tyra Banks for a second there) and excellent mosher Ben Rayner, Throwing Up make super cool snarly stripped-down punk that sounds to these ears like a catchy post-grunge echo of DC’s Chalk Circle mixed with a bit of that lo-fi Messthetics-style hustle bustle.

Photo: Clare James ClareTU has plenty of vomexperience on which to draw, as bassface Clare recalls, “I woke up in the middle of night and projectiled all over my bedroom. That included my ex-boyfriend’s face, dick, slippers, and all the clothes on my rail. When I finally made it to the loo there wasn’t even any vom left in me.”

We can but hope that this is not the case for Throwing Up and that they do indeed have plenty left to spew forth. No release plans as yet — first show “soon!”

I’m feeling a little lightheaded with all these sick metaphors, time bow out here and just say LISTEN (and here’s their Tumblr.)

Costume Punx

29 10 2010

Halloween is upon us, and if you happen to live in a country that celebrates this, the most goth day of the year, then I’m willing to bet your primary concerns right now are either Pumpkin shortages, or what in the name of Lucifer you’re going to dress as.

If in doubt, a paper bag over the head is a sure fire winner

Assuming that you’ll be avoiding all those nasty heteronormative clichés (no punk would ever lump for sexy vampire / zombie / witch now, would they?!) like the plague, you could do a lot worse than look to the wildest ever dressed scene for some inspiration. Of course, we’re talking about LA Punk circa 1977-79. As you’ll be wanting to differentiate from this kind of heinous shittery, you’ll need to get specific.

Brendan Mullen’s book ‘Live at the Masque: Nightmares in Punk Alley’ documents the

Dress you and your girlfriends up as Castration Squad and rage in the streets?

bands, events and outfits of this scene, from anonymous lurkers to Darby himself, quite often in rare technicolour detail. In addition to this, a radical lady and obsessive archivist of this period is none other than Alice Bag, whose Flickr feed provides a motherlode of OG snapsnots of subterranean self-styled freaky legends.

If you ask me, these combos are way too good to keep to one day of the year, so draw on a Germs Burn, talc up your face a little, and get outlandish!

New Band Spotlight: Pettybone

16 09 2010

Trans-national hardcore ragers PETTYBONE have been shaking things up in London for the past few months, injecting some much needed socially conscious girl rage into the largely boy-centric punk scene in this city. Ivona, Amy, Lianna and Zel make up Pettybone, from Czech Republic, Germany, London and Cornwall respectively!  Their music is fairly unclassifiable in the best way, but mixes bits of ‘big’ sounding metallic hardcore that’s heavy on the chug with mid-paced, almost crusty sounds and a dose of ’90s-style impassioned melody. It’s just really exciting.

Of their name, they say:

We’re named after the artist Raymond Pettibon with a feminine twist [...] One of most – if not the most iconic artist in punk rock. Although a few people have asked if we are Undertow / Edge Of Reason tribute band after John Pettibone. However this is not true.

They’ve just recorded an album in Putney with Sam Thredder, which has been mixed by Kurt Ballou, and are currently looking for someone to put it out.

You can listen to their demo, being given away at shows, currently here.

Video of the Week: Penetration

25 08 2010

One of the less-cited-in-lazy-reviews (never in MRR, natch!) ’77 lady singers, Pauline Murray of PENETRATION handles herself here with graceful aplomb, despite the infernal rain of what we can clearly assume to be Newkie Brown being hurled at her by the amoeba-brained goofs in the crowd from this video shot in Manchester.
