Kevin Mahoney of SIEGE: 1965-2011

22 10 2011

Kevin J. Mahoney, the former vocalist of Siege, passed away on Friday October 14th. The official cause of death has not been reported, but it is believed to have been sudden.

Mahoney was born on September 6th, 1965, and played saxophone in a ska band before joining Kurt Habelt, Henry McNamee and Rob Williams to complete the line-up of Siege. The band’s first official show was at a “Battle of the Bands” in the spring of 1984 at their Weymouth, MA high school, where they were disqualified when McNamee smashed his bass onstage.

Although the band’s members lived in and near Braintree, MA (near Boston and also home to Jerry’s Kids and Gang Green), the band was never fully accepted by the XClaim-dominated Boston hardcore scene. They were definitely not lacking sonically, however, playing furious music at breakneck speed and pioneering a new style of brutal and nihilistic hardcore.

In 1984, Siege went into Radiobeat studios to record a demo with Lou Giordano. The tape made its way through the hardcore punk underground, and clearly made an impression on Pushead for one, who included Siege on his seminal 1985 compilation Cleanse the Bacteria. The band split up the same year, and the three songs on Cleanse the Bacteria were to be the only “official” release by the band, until Relapse and Deep Six reissued the demo on CD and vinyl in 1994 and 2006, respectively.

At the time of his passing, Kevin was working in the IT department at Children’s Hospital Boston, where he had served in many capacities in his several years there. Prior to Children’s, Kevin worked for many years – beginning in 1992 – in the IT department at Brigham and Women’s Hospital, Boston.

Record of the Week: RazorXFade LP

9 09 2011

The Chicago straightedge nails it again. I missed out on their demo so I can’t make a comparison, but RAZORXFADE sounds like they’ve simply listened to all subgenres of top-shelf hardcore for years, and applied this to their songwriting and musical aesthetic with expertise. When I can hear identifiable elements of Boston Not L.A.-era GANG GREEN, INFEST, SSD, and YOUTH OF TODAY flawlessly worked into a number of songs that still sounds like the band’s own creations, I know that they’re on to something that’s more than enough to forgive their stupid name. Most of these songs go in unpredictable directions and will speed up or go into a mosh breakdown on a dime, yet the band is good enough at writing good songs and original riffs that there’s no forced or herky-jerky anything to get in the way. All of this is backed by vocals that are, um, boiling over with spite and possibly spit, and in the red of the already abrasive recording that makes it fitting that this was put out by a member of RAW NERVE. Along with DURESS, POISON PLANET, NOOSE, and A SORRY EXCUSE, this band can be added to the list of Midwest bands that are redefining straight edge hardcore to mean something raw, raging, and with substance, no pun intended. Record of the Week: BROWN SUGAR/ MAYDAY! split EP

29 06 2011

Two of Buffalo’s best-kept secrets on one record? Color me stoked. BROWN SUGAR’s first song kicks things off at a lazy tempo, and a feeling that’s somewhere between early ’70s urban decay and early ’80s sun-drenched suburban boredom, with vocals that are equally lethargic, snotty, and aggro. For the rest of their side, the feeling remains, but the speed increases to a hardcore pace, and has them gratuitously/blatantly lifting a riff from BLACK SABBATH’s “The Wizard” at one point. On this record, they have a loose, unpolished sound with a slightly jangly guitar tone and a bass that sounds like it’s being run through a shitty, overdriven solid state amp. I get the impression that this band is comprised of avid record collectors that are just as influenced by ’60s and ’70s rock, garage, psych, and maybe even soul records as they are classic hardcore records. On the other side is MAYDAY!, whose ALLEY CATS-meets-B-52′S dystopian beach party stylings instantly won me over when I heard their 7” from last year, and these two songs are even more captivating. Their sound here is darker and more pissed (especially in the vocals), but without having lost any of the sass and melody of their earlier stuff. Both bands are doing their own unique things, and I highly recommend this record. (Feral Kid Records)

Record of the Week: MUCH WORSE Absolute Nightmare EP

27 05 2011

Best record of 2011 so far. Imagine GOVERNMENT WARNING and ATROCIOUS MADNESS joining forces, and you might get something resembling the fusion of catchy song/riff writing and raging abrasion that is this record. MUCH WORSE puts forth fist-clenching riffs that are melodic and intricate, yet twisted and evoking of sadistic thoughts, all backed by someone who sounds like he’s laughing while telling a sorrowful tale. If this wasn’t enough, they clearly know how to write memorable songs that go somewhere, and the production is burly and raw without being unnecessarily noisy, which gives it this killer sound that’s loud and abrasive but also clear. Please do a West Coast tour so that I can rage at your Bay Area show and then follow you north and/or south. (No Way Records)
