Monday Photo Blog: Budget Rock RIP edition

24 10 2011

This past weekend marked the end of the Bay Area’s Budget Rock Fest. Ten years into it and Chris Owen, Mitch Cardwell and the whole gang wisely decided to pack it in. Don’t get me wrong — I’ve had plenty of fun at Budget Rock, but it’s good to see someone call it a day while they’re going on strong rather than dragging it out, you know? So, with that in mind, I thought I’d post a few shots from this year’s blow-out and a few hits/misses from the past few years too.

We’ve got a nice backlog of submissions — we’ll be getting them up soon! But keep ‘em coming! The more, the better.

Send your tour photos, bands that have come through your town, the best of your local bands, or something like this to: photoblog {at} maximumrocknroll(.)com. Include your name, the band, where and when it was shot, and a link to your website (or flickr, Facebook, or whatever). Just send your best photos — edit tightly. Three to five photos is plenty, and it’s best to send pictures of different bands. Please do not send watermarked photos. We like to exercise a little quality control here…not everything sent in will be posted. Please make your photos 72 dpi and about 600–800 pixels at the longest side. Thanks!

Monday Photo Blog: Return to Indonesia

26 09 2011

Of any country besides the US, Indonesia is probably the best represented here on MRR’s Monday Photo Blog. We get a steady stream of submissions from Indonesia photographers. Today’s came back in June from A. Okhi Irawan, a longtime MRR reader. Most of these photos are from the early ’00s “where the Indonesia’s despotic goverment change into reform age, and re-shape how punks movement during that age.”

Thanks for the photos  A. Okhi!

Monday Photo Blog: Useless Rebel edition

19 09 2011

After the awesome blast-from-the-past of Bill Daniel’s photos from last week I thought it appropriate to return to today for this Monday’s photos. Dante Torrieri/Useless Rebel sent a handful of photos from some shows in Philadelphia that stood out. It’s hard getting good, close-up shots of bands that still manage to capture any kind of emotion or excitement. Dante’s managed to do it with these photos. He regularly has photos in the Philly webzine Blow The Scene, or you can see plenty more photos at his Flickr site. DIG IN!

Monday Photo Blog: Tri-X Noise with Bill Daniel

12 09 2011

There’s a good chance that I’ve you’ve been reading MRR for any length of time you’re familiar with Bill Daniel. Punk, photographer, constant traveler, filmmaker, train hopper, skateboarder and fucking Guggenheim winner, among other labels you can easily hang around his neck. For our purposes here at MRR’s Monday Photo Blog we are, of course, focusing on Bill Daniel the Photographer. Bill was around Texas in the early ’80s, shooting shows, skating. Needless to say, he saw — and shot — some incredible bands. Today we’re bringing you a handful of shots he’s shared with us.

The Misfits at the Ritz, 29 January 1983 (photo by Bill Daniel)

No Flag at MacArthur Park, Los Angeles, CA 2011 (photo by Bill Daniel)

(Bill notes here the photos with both Keith Morris and Chuck Dukowski taken almost 30 years ago with a photo of the two on the same stage taken this past summer).

Bill recently started selling prints of some of his old show photos for dirt cheap — $25 for an 8×10 — on Tri-X Noise, a site he has showcasing prints he has for sale. This isn’t a plug for his site as much as me strongly encouraging you to maybe pass on that overpriced, Euro Misfits bootleg and pick up a print from Bill instead. You won’t be sorry. Big thanks to Bill for the photos.

5 09 2011

Hey, I know I promised a healthy dose of Bill Daniel‘s photos today, but he’s traveling, which is what he does, so the photos will come next week. Instead, I have a killer set of photos from Sylvain Zayard from France. He sent a shit-ton of awesome photos. Consider this part one of what will be at least two or three posts featuring Sylvain’s photos. Dig these for now.

Provoked at St. Pier, St. Etienne, France, 2005 (photo by Sylvain Zayard)

Monday Photo Blog: Old Timers Edition

22 08 2011

I admit, I’ve been to my fair share of punk reunion shows, but it’s getting, um old. Too many. Too much focus on the past (this coming from someone who listens to far more music from the ’70s and earlier than current shit). And while I guess it’s cool some people are more or less sticking to their guns in terms of ideals and lifestyle, there’s just something unsettling about seeing certain 50- and 60-year-olds, well, acting like 20-year-old versions of themselves. There are ways to hang on to what you believe, keep the torch burning and generally age gracefully…and ways that make you come off like the Wavy Gravy of punks. There are a whole lotta Wavy Gravy type punks out there, not giving up the ghost, for better or worse. Not necessarily saying that about this batch of photos at, but seeing them triggers that reaction, you know?

That said, here are three shots sent by Logan Young of Viriginia of some old timers. BONUS shirtless Jello Biafra photo for you all!!! Thanks(?) Logan.

Dave Thomas (Pere Ubu) at the Neighborhood Theater, Charlotte, NC, 24 March 2008 (photo by Logan Young)

HR (Bad Brains) at Rock & Roll Hotel, Washington, DC, 2 May 2010 (photo by Logan Young)

Jello Biafra (and The Guantanamo School of Medicine) at the Black Cat, Washington, DC, 30 March 2010 (photo by Logan Young)

For my money, Dave Thomas is aging the most gracefully here. Next week we’ll have another round of photos shot in the DC area (by Corky Berlin), of new bands.

It’s summer time! Send your tour photos, bands that have come through your town, or something like this, the best of your local bands. Send them to: photoblog {at} maximumrocknroll(.)com. Be sure to put “MRR Photo Blog” in the subject. Include your name, the band, where and when it was shot. Just send your best photos – edit tightly. Three to five photos is plenty.
