Threadbared is a blog by former MRR shitworker Mimi Nguyen, that focuses on the politics of style and fashion from a feminist and academic perspective. It’s not really the focus of MRR, but this post struck me as something that would cross over, so to speak. I always argue that punk is an idea, and a possibility, a musical idea or sound rather than a specific look, but having been written off my whole life for not looking the part or wearing the acceptable “punk” clothes it’s clear not everyone is on the same page as me. Mimi outlines more of the history of punk as a specific subcultural style, but what you will probably be more interested in is the fact that this artifact pictured to the left, a guide to punk style from early ’80s LA, features a pre-Go-Go’s Belinda Carlisle, and what looks like Helen Killer?? Plus the zine/booklet is downloadable as a PDF… I saw something similar at a second hand book store: a guide to punk and skate slang and trends in SF from a slightly later era, by Jennifer Blowdryer, and I always regretted not buying it. I love subcultural ephemera….

Bruce Roehrs passed away in his home on Saturday, March 13th, 2010. He was a genuine friend to many and always had your back and a kind word to boot. An ardent music fan as well as a long time column writer/contributor for Maximum Rocknroll, Bruce lived and breathed punk rock. Bruce will be sorely missed.

The Bruce Roehrs Memorial Fund
Bruce took many of his friends, both locals and out-of-towners, to the Columbarium in San Francisco, where he had happily made his home since the mid ’80s. Built in 1898, this San Francisco landmark is home to the memorial sites of some of SF’s founding families as well as some of its more notorious occupants, such as Dirk Dirksen (the punk music promoter nicknamed “The Pope of Punk”). It is a non-denominational memorial site that Bruce loved for its beauty, craftsmanship, and tranquility, and it was where his memorial service was held on Friday, April 9th, 2010. All money donated to the Bruce Roehrs Memorial Fund will be used to secure a spot for Bruce in the Columbarium, a place that is truly worthy of his memory.

We still need to raise a good deal of money for this, so please give if you can.

In a sneak preview of what’s to come in MRR #324, which doesn’t hit the presses till next month, this week’s new band alert focuses on a some teenage Danish punks, iceage who have made one of the best 7″s I have heard this year. It was recorded by Peter Peter, of the Sods and Sort Sol, who also, I believe, recorded my last favorite group of Danish teenagers, Hul. iceage do not capitalize the first I of their band name, in a ee cumming stylee, and their sound is taught, tense, and sounds like it could have been recorded in ’79 — truly great post-punk with an urgent and disturbing nervous energy.

Their 7″ came out on Escho Records, which usually puts out dance music, I believe, so it’s not something I woulda discovered if not for the fact my friend Ethan saw them play when he was touring with his band in Denmark and mailed me a 7″. Unfortunately, I think it’s out of print now, but apparently they are working on an LP, which I can’t wait to hear…

(photographer unknown)

Paco played us this record a few years ago, and it became an MRR obsession, but I never even thought to look them up on YouTube… The perfect antidote to the endless parade of clueless punks who endorse Skrewdriver (“Only the early work/BlahBlah Blah”). As someone who grew up in Thatcher’s Britain, with the dark shadow of the National Front and Combat 18, that never sits right with me… The lyrics to “Culture Crossover” are so fucking great and punk — Alien Kulture rules…

You can read the Alien Kulture story on their website here or in the Observer here.
