Video of the Week: Alien Kulture

24 02 2010

Alien Kulture

Paco played us this record a few years ago, and it became an MRR obsession, but I never even thought to look them up on YouTube… The perfect antidote to the endless parade of clueless punks who endorse Skrewdriver (“Only the early work/BlahBlah Blah”). As someone who grew up in Thatcher’s Britain, with the dark shadow of the National Front and Combat 18, that never sits right with me… The lyrics to “Culture Crossover” are so fucking great and punk — Alien Kulture rules…

You can read the Alien Kulture story on their website here or in the Observer here.

We Are the Lamb

17 01 2010

In honor of the recent reissue of The Brat‘s classic song, “The Wolf,” as a limited edition single on Timmy Hefner’s 540 Records, here is the feature on the band from the February 1982 issue of Low Rider magazine. (“The Wolf” was originally only available on the Rhino’s 1983 East LA comp LP, Los Angelinos: The Eastside Renaissance). I had only ever seen the cover of this Low Rider issue before, so thanks to Dave Hyde for posting the whole damn thing! Pretty incredible… I gotta hear the song “Misogyny” now! When is that Brat discography ever comin’ out??

May I Have the Next Thrash?

14 10 2009

may i

Bruce brought over a bunch of pasteboards for old MRR Radio fliers, and this was on the back of one of them. Looks like this was what was being considered as a name for the Not So Quiet on the Western Front comp: May I Have the Next Thrash? Because this was on the back of another board, it’s cut off in the middle of the band names…

Adventures Close to Home

13 10 2009

I went to see the Raincoats play a couple days ago. My old band played their first reunion show in 1993, when the first LP was reissued on corporate overlord Geffen for some reason (otherwise known as Kurt Cobain). Sixteen years later their first LP has just been reissued again by Kill Rock Stars this time, I believe it’s vinyl only. Anyway, they played this weird post-punk revival show with Viv Albertine from the Slits, and she joined them for this song. I always go to reunion shows with a heavy heart, you know, do you really wanna see a bunch of middle aged people reliving the past? It’s like a theater performance sometimes, like Civil War enactment displays, where both the audience and band are playing the part… Anyway, the Raincoats were refreshingly shaky and charming, reminding me of why I loved that first LP so, and this song exemplified some weird alchemy for me at least…

Someone stole the Che Cafe’s sound system!!

7 08 2009

“Yeah no joke. Fucked up. Words kind of fail me. Both stage monitors, three power amps, ALL of our mics, xlr cables, direct in boxes, the sound board itself, ALL of it has been STOLEN. We’re looking at 8 to 10 thousand dollars worth of equipment fucking gone.

The plus side is shows WILL go on. We’ve been through too much already this year to let this even possibly end the Che Cafe. If you’re scheduled to play and are concerned please reply or get in touch with the person that has booked your show.

Please repost and spread the word. Its a beyond fucked up situation and we’re going to need help in getting everything back up to normal. If anyone hears anything, your friend suddenly has a sweet PA, sound system, plethora of mics and cables or notice what is probably our equipment on ebay or craigslist, etc, please please please contact us. Specifically:
Mackie 16 Channel 1604 VLZ Pro
2 X QSC RMX 1450
1 X QSC RMX 2450

Fuck you to whatever piece of garbage broke in and ransacked the place. A police report has been filed. This problem will be solved.”

This is bad news! Che Cafe is an all volunteer run collective space that has been putting on all ages shows in San Diego for decades-if you know anything or can help em out click the link below

Mondo Vision #5!

4 08 2009

Hey check out the new episode of Mondo Vision,  featuring three of my favorite current bands: Tuberculosis from South Central LA, XYX from Monterrey Mexico and Brilliant Colors from San Francisco. Mondo Vision is a great video scene report, usually covering bands from the Bay Area, but with the agenda of inspiring kids to make their own scene and document it! DIY or DIE!
