Check it out, it’s Maximum Rocknroll #415, the December 2017 issue! We are proud to feature an interview conducted by the organizer of the Bay Area’s Evaluate What You Tolerate compilation and zine with Cat Brooks, co-founder of the Anti Police-Terror Project. She speaks at length with us about organizing alternatives to state policing. We also hear from Portland, Oregon’s No! To Rape Culture collective about marginalized people collectively organizing against rape and other forms of oppression. Ex-VELVET UNDERGROUND member Willie “Loco” Alexander spills all about his 50-plus-year-long “so-called career” from his early garage rock years to his modern recordings. We also have part two of our lengthy article about the history of Alabama punk, covering Huntsville, Tuscaloosa, and more! Also included is an article in tribute to the radical life of Fred “Freak” Smith of BEEFEATER. We have a ton of international punk coverage this month! There is a massive feature on Sheffield, England, including a scene report, a mini-interivew with the Kids of the Lughole label, a full-length interview with COMMUNITY, and a photo spread from the Noise Annoys festival. For those hungry more more photos, there’s some fresh shots from Toronto’s Not Dead Yet fest as well. Russia’s STRESSHOLD give exclusive tidbits about touring and feminism in their home country, while Irish punks GRIT describe the politics and gentrification in Ireland. We also get updates about mental health from misanthropic Norwegian punks NEGATIV (who are a lot more positive than you’d expect). Plus you’ll find enough columns and reviews to gossip over for the rest of the month. So what are you waiting for?
We are a contributor-driven publication, which means that we rely on punks like you to fill our pages. This is your magazine! You don’t need an invitation to be a part of what we do.
For review and radio play consideration, send two copies of vinyl or one copy of CD- or cassette-only releases to PO Box 460760, San Francisco, CA 94146, USA. Send us the final version of your record—we do not review digital releases, test presses, or promo CDs. All tapes and CD-Rs are reviewed in the Demos section.
We will review everything that falls within our areas of coverage: independent punk, garage, and hardcore. This means no major labels or labels that are exclusively distributed by major-owned distributors. We reserve the right to reject releases on the basis of content. Music without vocals or drums will not be considered.
Every record that is reviewed is added to our archive, the largest collection of punk records in the world. Please allow two months from your mailing date before following up to ask if we’ve received your submission.
We are always looking for interview, scene report, guest column, and photo submissions. Submission does not guarantee publication. In order to improve the chances of your submission being printed, please read our FAQ.
In addition to records, we also review independently published and produced zines, books, and movies. Please send physical copies to PO Box 460760, San Francisco, CA 94146, USA. If you have a streaming link to your film, or if it is playing in the San Francisco Bay Area, please email the information to firstname.lastname@example.org.
We rely on distributors to help us reach punks all over the world. Our distros come in all shapes and sizes, from the large companies that sell to newsstands and chain bookshops to a punk who sets up a box on a table at a show. As long as you know people who are interested in reading MRR you too can successfully distribute the magazine! If you have suggestions for places that we should contact about carrying the magazine, get in touch.
In the US you can order five or more of the same issue of MRR for only $2.49 each plus postage. If you are interested in carrying the magazine, write to us with the desired quantity, a shipping address, and your preferred form of payment. There is a small fee associated with Paypal payments.
Newsstand circulation is available through TNG. Other wholesalers who carry the magazine include Ebullition, Revolver, Small Changes, Media Solutions, and Kent News.
We have access to some of the cheapest international shipping rates offered by the USPS. We ship international packages to distributors once a month—individual issues start at $1.75 each. Shipping costs vary by country.
If you are interested in carrying the magazine, write to us with the desired quantity, a shipping address, and your Paypal email address. We send money requests for payment once a month, prior to shipping.
We encourage international distributors to set up subscription services in their city or country. Splitting the wholesale costs of magazines between a group of friends is much more affordable than ordering subscriptions directly from us.
Advertising with Maximum Rocknroll doesn’t just support us—it allows us to support you. Our reputation as the “Bible of Punk” means that our thousands of readers worldwide rely on us to keep them in the know. There’s no better way to let the punk world know what you’re about than with an ad in MRR.
We only accept ads from bands, labels, distributors, and publishers that we would cover in our reviews sections. Other types of advertisers we take on a case-by-case basis. We reserve the right to refuse any ad and will refund your fee. New advertisers, please contact us first, before sending an ad or payment.
