“New Blood” is our weekly feature spotlighting new bands from around the world! See below for info on how to submit. Now, check out some killer new shit…

Band name:
NEGATIV

Date & location formed:
Late winter 2015 in Gamlebyen/Oldtown, Oslo.

Reason for forming:
Frustration with supertechnical trendy, pacified hardcore punk.
We wanted to play old school hardcore with elements of everything we enjoy from NEGAZIONE to SVART FRAMTID to GAUZE.

negativ

What are your lyrics about?
Depression, anger, uselessness, gentrification, all the absurd human performances and glue.

How would you describe your sound?
Dark, stripped down, rockin’ primitive hardcore punk for negative punks.

What’s in the future for this band?
Hopefully a demo tape and then a EP or maybe even a full-length. We also want to do some touring, but some of
our members aren’t allowed to travel outside of scadinavia at the moment.

Band name:
VATS

Date & location formed:
We got together in summer 2013 in Seattle.

Reason for forming:
Because we found each other.

What are your lyrics about?
We have songs about household objects, dreams, movies we like, the pains and pleasures of being hit on, mind games, and once in a while we write about serious personal matters…

How would you describe your sound?
We’ve been called ‘post punk’ a lot but like… what does that even tell you? We like our sound to vary song-by-song so we don’t get bored with writing. Some are moody, some are dancy, some are spazzy, some are aggressive, some are jazzy. We are loud.

What’s in the future for this band?
Our first full length LP called “Green Glass Room” is dropping in July along with a new music video we filmed and edited ourselves. We’re doing a US tour (and parts of Canada) in July/August as well.

Band name:
CASUAL HEX

Date & location formed:
April 2015.

Reason for forming:
Casual Hex formed as a way to hold on to the musical bond between the three of us. We all played in a band together before that had broken up 6 months prior to Casual Hex forming.

What are your lyrics about?
The lyrics are a cathartic expression for processing personal experiences and general ideas on the human condition.

How would you describe your sound?
Forbidding post-punk with an emphasis on angularity and dissonance. Dark, driving bass lines. Sporadic guitar. Pitch-shifted vocals.

What’s in the future for this band?
We are currently working on writing a full length album that we intend on releasing at the end of the summer. We do not have any plans of touring right now but hope to make it out to the East coast soon and Europe in the near future.

Band name:
Captura de pantalla 2016-05-05 a las 22.20.37

Date & location formed:
June 2015, Cambridge MA.

Reason for forming:
We met hanging around local punk shows, and came together because we were hungry to express ourselves in our own way and find a way to share our culture. We were disappointed at the lack of opportunity to do so before we met.

What are your lyrics about?
Dehumanized Culture.

Band name:
DRY HEAVE

Date & location formed:
September 2015, Champaign, Illinois.

Reason for forming:
Elliot needed a band. James needed a band. Abby needed a band. And Mario was too nice to say no.

How would you describe your sound?
We like being clumped with “weirdo Midwest punk”. It’s like awwwwwww, friends.

What’s in the future for this band?
We’ve got some cool shows coming up: last show at the Dingbat Dungeon in Urbana, IL with 86 Gemini (CHI) and Bugg (IN) and Pryss (Springfield, IL); show with Validation (Seattle) at Black Sheep in Springfield; we’re playing an after show for Dumb Fest in Springfield, IL. Hopefully, we will be putting out a new tape by July.

Band name:
CHUSMA

Date & location formed:
Spring 2015 in Oakland.

Reason for forming:
When Menstrual Psycho was going into hiatus we still wanted to keep making music, and so Chusma was born. Kept it simple by being a two-piece which makes it easier for scheduling practices and shows as well as jamming in general. We also wanted to experiment with other instruments so we switch off halfway through our sets.

What are your lyrics about?
Injustices of society, social commentary, inside jokes, tortas, inspirational mantras, rage, and homages to old rap songs.

How would you describe your sound?
That’s a good question. We don’t even know most of the time. Vignettes of improvised amateur instrumentals, obnoxious intentional feedback, experimental punk, sprinkled with love.

CHUSMA FIRST SHOW

What’s in the future for this band?
More cowbell! Getting heavier and faster! Recordings and touring! A three-way split within the next year or so with two other two-pieces. Our next show will be Aklasan Fest 3 July 16th, it such an honor to be playing with all the bands and the support we have received thus far.
