Band name:
BAD BLOOD
Date & location formed:
January 2014 in Olympia and Chicago.
Reason for forming:
Adjustment disbanded and I [Jeff] had songs written for the LP Ralph was going to put out. I combined those songs with some Scary Man riffs we never got to use. We released them together as a long distance project between Olympia and Chicago with the help of our friends Mirce and Liz.
What are your lyrics about?
The lyrics are personal to Ralph so it would be better fielded by him. From what I took of the concept, it seemed to touch on his own racial identity and his job and family.
How would you describe your sound?
The sound is fast and chaotic hardcore punk.
What’s in the future for this band?
As it sits now looks like we’re a fest and touring band because of our distance. We played Ralph’s Not Normal Showcase and the Olympia Hardcore Fest, Jeff organized and toured down the West Coast with Tercer Mundo August 9th through the 15th!
Band name:
CONSTANT INSULT
Matt Stagner: Drums and heart
Mike Wilson: Bass and flowing locks
Katie Thornton: Guitar, vocals, and superior locks
Wil Olsen: Other
Date & location formed:
Late winter/early spring 2014 in South Minneapolis, Minnesota.
Reason for forming:
K: In the summer of 2013 Mike and I sat on my stoop and wrote a to-do list for the rest of the year. We only got around to writing two items: 1) BAND, 2) RIFFS. We’d been talking about forming a band for years, but It always seemed to be a pipedream because Mike was already in a bunch of bands and living in Duluth, and I’ve been in school out of state.
Mi: Last winter Wil was also stoked on the idea of that band, and Katie was taking a semester at home, so we all started hittin’ the basement practice space hard. Then we saw this new band Uranium Club and were like, “What’s up with that drummer!?” And that’s how we met Matt, the simultaneous recipient of awards World’s Best Drummer and Best Person Ever.
What are your lyrics about?
Friends’ lives, frustration, time, losing touch with people, bad habits… Pain, sadness, bullshit, life—you know, things that ultimately add up to feel, at times, like life can be a constant insult.
K: I’m trying to write some more hopeful songs and celebrate the things I do care about, the people I love, all the stuff that makes it worth going through this constant shit of life. It’s hard!
How would you describe your sound?
W: When we were first forming Katie said something like, “What about a band that sounds like the Rolling Stones meets the Marked Men?” and we were all like, “Cool, yeah, let’s do it.” Then we started writing songs and don’t sound like that, but maybe that’s a good thing.
What’s in the future for this band?
W: Last time I saw Mike he was wearing shorts and hitchhiking to northern Minnesota in a blizzard. Last time I saw Katie was when she came back to MN to see the Replacements at Midway Stadium. Last time I saw Matt was this afternoon in our kitchen. So who knows? But we’ve got a 12″ record/tape coming out on Let’s Pretend Records in spring 2015, and we’re super stoked about that definitely wanna continue rockin’ with each other.
Reason for forming:
A shared hatred of stink bugs.
What are your lyrics about?
Work, alcoholism, Alzheimer’s, black metal Nazis, Sonny Chiba movies.
How would you describe your sound?
Garage-y, ’80s styled skate rock. JFA meets Motards?
What’s in the future for this band?
We will be contributing a couple tracks to Tsuguri Records’ 3rd Transcendental Maggot compilation along with Toe Tag and Flag of Democracy.
