Jasmine Minks What’s Happening / Black and Blue 7″
Kinda folk-punk with catchy electric songs, not unlike a slightly less crazy SOFT BOYS. Poppy, but good guitar sound and not at all wimpy.

More “electric Q-tip” music from the neo-noise boys from England. A-side contains a JESUS AND MARY CHAIN meets the BYRDS noise/pop ditty, while the flip is more in the ultra-treble tradition.
Demented punk blues in the JESUS AND MARY CHAIN mold. Off-key, noise-laden feedback city, electric viola—a real painful mess that brings joy to one’s twisted heart. Good.
Very percussion-heavy post-punk meets pre-punk. In other words, there are elements of the VELVETS, ’50s R’n’R, Chinn/Chapman, all blown to hell in a ’80s noise blast that recalls no nostalgia—only perplexion.
Don’t be fooled by the cartoon of the guy in a RAMONES T-shirt on the back cover, or the frantic maniac on the front cover: this is not wild shit. It’s more of a BIRTHDAY PARTY-type minimalist rock. Well done, but not crazed.
Abrasive, raucous yet sparse fast-paced post-punk. Reminds me at times of the FALL meets BLURT meets the JESUS AND MARY CHAIN.
This could be the 45 of the month. “Do the Ghost” is an amazingly great punky-pop song with a driving tempo, loud guitar riffing, animated singing, and classy join-in backing vocals; “Talk” is a bit less frantic and basic, but still rockin’ and fun. More, please.
This is the second release from an English band that has superb garagability. Both sides here have great hooks with the A-side being slower and starker; it’s the poppier number here. The flip is faster, more upbeat, and has a great grinding guitar break. A must for psych-pop garage fans.
