The title track of this record is a giant of a song; it must be heard through huge Cerwin Vega speakers driven by a 200-watt amp. HULA is definitely more commercially viable with this release, but previous tunes displayed a benign but invigorating quality. Nevertheless, this is excellent.
Despite the all-too-obvious SIOUXSIE influences, SKELETAL FAMILY has managed to produce something of value here, mainly because of their tasty, haunting guitar work and snappy drum attack. The B-side is more intriguing, with its occasional shrieks, and if this band can hold onto their musical muscle, they could develop into an exceptional combo.
Ex-FALL guitarist Marc Riley and his ilk have come up with another quirky, rigid fast-paced Anglo post-punk record. It’s no accident that this should appeal to FALL fans or fans of groups like the THREE JOHNS or the MEKONS, as guitarists from both groups make appearances here.
Just because this is one of my favorite bands doesn’t mean I’m biased. This is great! Imagine a fuller-sounding Las Vegas Story / Death Party, a must for all GUN CLUB fans. OK, maybe a little biased.
